Where to find help

Consult independent websites or on campus librarians for help.

Online Fact Checking Resources:

Factcheck.org (Current events)

  1. If researching a recent trending topic, check the homepage.

  2. Otherwise, use the search function that is located on navigation bar, second from the right. Because the search is powered by Google, search for a few key terms and the algorithm will automatically plug in synonyms or related topics (e.g. “Vaccine Autism Wakefield”).

  3. If the article cannot be found or is too recent, use the Ask a Question function located on the navigation bar, third from left.

Politifact.com (Politics)

  1. If researching a recent trending topic, check the homepage.

  2. Use the People menu on the navigation bar to find assertions by major players in politics.

  3. Otherwise, use the search bar located on the top right of the page. Search by name of speaker and key terms in the quote (e.g. “Clinton sniper Bosnia”).

Snopes.com (Viral threads and outlandish tales)

  1. If researching a recent trending topic, check the homepage.

  2. Use search bar on top left to verify tabloid-like headlines (e.g. “Kangaroo steals Gucci”)

Librarians:

As a student at Santa Clara, when researching for one of your classes, our library and librarians are here to help! If you’re trying to get access to an article or book that you’re having trouble getting access to, looking for some expert knowledge about the scholarship in any field, or even just looking for help getting started, reach out to the appropriate subject librarian. It is their JOB to help! You can find your subject’s librarian here - https://www.scu.edu/library/contact/subject-librarians/ You can feel free to reach out via email to get help or to make an appointment to meet up with any of Santa Clara’s librarians at any time!

For less subject-specific and more immediate help, you can also text a librarian at 408-706-7110, or chat with a librarian online at http://askalibrarian.scu.edu. Finally, you can always just go to the front desk of the library and ask to speak to a librarian!

Happy researching!
